We invite you to enter into the magical walls of The Secret Garden - a special guest house and cottage hidden away in the very heart of downtown Mount Shasta.
The Secret Garden is a home away from home. The front door opens onto a cobblestone courtyard with lovely French Gardens, ideal for sitting and writing, contemplating, and watching the world go by. At the back door (French doors) you will find a majestic covered redwood deck, and below, English gardens with a stone patio. At the right time of year, enjoy the plums, apples, and peaches, and from Spring to Autumn enjoy the artisty of the garden, designed and maintained by one of Mount Shasta's most creative garders. Directly cross the alley in back, you will find the second house, the Garden Cottage (not yet available). Both homes are private. Parking is off the alleyway in well lighted guest parking spaces.
The guest rentals follow the theme of Frances Hodge Burnett's book The Secret Garden. You might want to read or reread the story before coming, or read one of the copies available for guests while staying within the magical walls of Mount Shasta's very own Secret Garden. The building, before the extensive remodel, was the home of Golden Bough Books, and our goal was to keep the tradition of this very fine bookstore going, only now as a guest rental.
My hope is to help create magic in your stay in Mount Shasta.
Above is the parking area, off the alley in the back.
(The little pale blue house seen behind the scarlet fence is the Garden Cottage, scheduled to open in 2014.)
Pictured above is the custom stone patio, in Spring, before the flower bloom (and wildness).
The covered deck of The Secret Garden takes you into the breakfast nook and kitchen, with the dining area beyond.
Breakfast nook is pictured on the left. Lovely place to sit and feel peaceful, or enjoy a meal. Beyond the nook is the kitchen, which is fully equipped, including interesting cookbooks to experiment with on cold winter evenings. We also offer tea samples from Sereni-tea to spice up, refresh, or invigorate your day.
The large dining table seats 6. Dishes and silverware were chosen to reflect the mood of The Secret Garden. Also, original paintings, most by our local artist Willo Balfrey, help create the elegent and dreamy feel of this lovely home.
The Secret Garden offers a queen plus sleeper sofa with a Tempurpedic mattress downstairs, and two twin beds in the loft. The twin beds upstairs can be together, or pulled apart, depending on your needs.
You will find a bathroom made in heaven, with heated tile floors, a soaking tub, a separate shower, all with soothing colors and windows opening to fresh mountain air.
For those long winter evenings, The Secret Garden offers a gas burning heat stove, casting the soft glow of flames for the ultimate cozy and relaxing mood. For those who like, the gas stove has a little drawer for heating aromatherapy oils.
The Secret Garden has a wonderful view of Mount Shasta and Mount Eddy in the winter, and in the summer when the trees are full of life, there is the treat of the vibrant garden, with the Eddies visible from the redwood deck.
We offer a quality home away from home, with careful thought put into all the details. We strive to make your experience magical.
The Garden Cottage
The Cottage is still in its planning stages, but we do know that it will offer a queen sized bed in the bedroom and a comfortable couch that will open into a full sized bed in the living room. It's cute as it is, but we are going for special, airy, and from-the-heart-warm.
My vision for guests of The Secret Garden is a relaxing, magical stay. Although each home will sleep four, the decor is geared toward peaceful, not toward parties or lots of activity. Our neighbors are quiet, reflective folks, and we like to cater to the same.
A small, well behaved dog is welcome, and encouraged to come along! Please make other arrangements for larger or adolescent dogs. I know from experience that even the most well behaved adolescent might take fascination in a carpet edge, or put scratches in the Brazilian Cherrywood floors, the Jeld Wen doors, or gnaw just a tad on the irresistible furniture, never mind those enticing vertical posts on the deck. As much as I love dogs and want them to be with their owners at all times, The Secret Garden is not a good choice for a young, or a larger dog. We just have too much to lose. We have other vacation rentals in Mount Shasta that will be more suited to your needs. (Can you tell I love dogs?)
While we are on the topic of preserving the specialness of The Secret Garden, we have been advised to keep the experience a "no children" guest home. This may change over time, but for now, we have too much to lose, with our somewhat fragile decor.
We also have a 55 inch flat screen television, DVD player (on the red cabinet to the right in the photo below) and, of course, free internet.
Walk to Berryvale Market just around the corner, and bring "home" organic foods, cooking up a fun recipe from special cookbooks on the bookshelves of your home away from home. Or grab an organic meal at Berryvale's Deli and bring home some Reeds ginger ice cream for dessert. Or feast at the delicious Andaman Healthy Thai, and afterward stop in at Village Books, browsing the staff recommended books, adding a book about Mount Shasta to your collection, or read up on the fascinating history of Siskiyou county. Enjoy an espresso at the cafe inside the Black Bear Gallery or stop in next door to the Secret Garden at Anaflora Flower Essences for Animals, made by the world renowned animal mystic, Sharon Callahan. Take a yoga class at Mount Shasta Yoga Center, located just next to Berryvale Market, and check their event calendar for special presentations. Not to forget the fantastic teas you can find at Sereni-tea! All this, and much more, within easy walking distance from The Secret Garden, and yet feel private and tucked away.
For the heartier folks, the cinema center is maybe a ten minute walk from The Secret Garden. But then why walk to the movies if you can stay put in your jammies and watch the highly acclaimed British filming of the Secret Garden. Or just rent a movie you've wanted to see at Couch Critics, an easy walk to Chestnut Street.
Slip in and out of The Secret Garden, never having to go far at all.
If you would like to get into your car and explore, I encourage you to have breakfast at The Mount Shasta Bakery (really, it is within walking distance also). Their breakfasts are good, and their baked goods heavenly, to put it mildly. Since you are already using your car on this day, I suggest you then take a walk on the well maintained walkway along Lake Siskiyou, one of the most beautiful lakes ever!
Be sure to take the drive up Mount Shasta, exploring.
And end your day at the Shasta Pinnacle for a delicious dinner (or enjoy their lunch).
Mount Shasta is just simply a lovely area, with so much to see and explore and experience (and good food to eat). Interesting people abound, and people watching is a great past time, as it is a haven for the New Age group as well as the avid outdoors types, and then there are the good ol' simple folk (with not so simple stories) who just love the area and the community.
Our rates: $185.00 per night, two night minimun, major holiday weekends $205.00 per night with a two night minimum. Additional fees: cleaning fee, pet fee, and transient tax (our property manager will give you details about the additional costs).
Up to four adults are welcome. At this time we don't accept children.
Please call 530-926-6400 with any questions, or to book your reservation. We are under new management, so this number might be new to you! Or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
